Provocative, small-scale experiments to test how conditions affect flavor, yield, and resilience in heirloom tomatoes.
Begin by selecting one variable—soil texture, watering frequency, or companion planting—and limit the scope to 2–4 varieties. Try growing a late-maturing, thin-skinned heirloom variety in different soil types to compare fruit characteristics. Keep all other care identical: same seed source, same sun exposure, same pruning. Record differences in skin thickness and early fruit set.
For a pollination test, Bag clusters on one plant each of two small-fruit heirloom varieties, then hand-pollinate with a brush vs. leaving others open. Track fruit set rate, time to ripen, and seed count. Watch for variation in currant types—Those with potato leaves often show higher self-pollination rates, though manual assistance may still improve fruit set.
Design prompts so they can be repeated across years. Try a late-season moisture challenge: Cut water in half for one mature plant of a beefsteak-type heirloom in late season, leave another fully watered. Compare measurements of sugar content, flesh firmness, and aroma. Use taste notes alongside measurements—flavor shifts often appear before yield changes do.
