Triggered by Proof Test

Step-by-step visual cue for the fingertip test—no text parsing, just guidance.

The fingertip test is simple: gently press your finger into the dough. If the indent springs back quickly, it needs more time. If it stays completely and doesn’t rebound, it’s over-proofed. If it springs back slowly and partially, that’s the sweet spot—dough is properly proofed. Our interface highlights the test with a live graphic: an animated finger, soft amber glow on success.

This test works best on loaves that have been shaped taut-side up on a floured towel or in a basket. The dough should feel soft and springy, not stiff or slack. Watch for subtle cues like slight doming at the top or a smooth, taut surface. If you’re in doubt, wait ten minutes and retest—over-proofing is often worse than under-proofing for home bakers.

Humidity and temperature shift how the test feels. In dry kitchens, the crust may set too early and mask true proof. In warm rooms, fermentation can accelerate past the window quickly. Our tool animates your current dough state beside the test, so you always know whether your loaf is ready for baking, cold-proofing, or just another rest.
