Cherokee Purple
Dusky-red, smoky-sweet with deep shoulder color; reliable in humid climates with good drainage and full sun.
Cherokee Purple produces heavy yields of medium-large, irregular beefsteaks with a rich, complex flavor and low acidity. Its skin starts deep burgundy with green shoulders even when fully mature, and the flesh inside is a translucent crimson with dense, juicy texture. It performs well in warm, humid regions if planted in raised beds or well-draining soil to avoid root rot.
As an indeterminate heirloom, it requires sturdy support and regular pruning. Remove suckers and thin foliage to improve airflow and prevent blight. It responds well to compost-based fertilizers and benefits from deep, infrequent watering to encourage deep roots. In coastal or southeastern climates, apply preventative compost tea sprays during rainy seasons.
Seed saving is straightforward thanks to its open pollination and stable genetics. Harvest fruit at peak ripeness and ferment seeds for several days. Mix seed lots from multiple plants to preserve diversity. This heirloom often improves in flavor and yield over successive seasons through on-farm selection and selective seed saving.
