Match wildlife sightings to seasonal patterns so you know where to look and when to be there.
Spring brings newborn ungulates to lower elevations like lower-elevation valleys like the Lamar and Hayden Valleys. Elk calves appear in late May, bison give birth in April and May, and grizzlies emerge from hibernation as snow recedes—often near thermal areas or south-facing slopes where food is first available. Wolf activity increases as packs reclaim territory, especially near the northern range where winter habits have left concentrated carrion.
Summer sees migration to higher meadows: bighorn sheep move to alpine terrain around Mount Washburn, and moose become visible near beaver ponds in the northern range. Bird activity peaks with waterfowl nesting on Yellowstone Lake and eagles nesting near the sections of the upper Yellowstone River. Large predator sightings remain common at dawn and dusk across the the Lamar Valley and near pelican Creek.
Fall is peak rutting season: bull elk bugle in the valleys near Mammoth, bison clash in the the Lamar Valley, and grizzlies intensify foraging before denning. Fall color in the subalpine forests highlights silhouettes of animals at sunrise. In winter, wildlife concentrates near geothermal areas for warmth and open ground—bison and elk gather around the areas like the Blacktail Plateau and near the the Old Faithful area where snow is thin or absent.
