Road conditions in Yellowstone are highly dynamic due to weather, wildlife movement, and seasonal maintenance. The the road from the North Entrance to Cooke City opens in late April or May depending on snowpack, while the the highway connecting to the northeast entrance, which feeds into the northeast entrance, typically doesn’t open until mid-to-late May. Meanwhile, the road through the park’s interior—the road connecting Gardiner to West Yellowstone—often stays open longer into fall but may close temporarily after heavy rain or snowmelt runoff.
Some roads open in phases: for example, the road to Tower Falls area may open in early spring for through traffic but restrict access near the falls until safety assessments are complete. The some high-elevation roads such as those to Cascade Lake and Mount Washburn usually open later, in June, once snow has cleared and slopes stabilize. Road surfaces also vary: high-elevation sections like around high-elevation sections like Dunraven Pass feature sharp grades and limited guardrails, requiring cautious driving especially during early season thaw.
