Reservation Protocols
Reservations in Ginza’s top establishments follow unspoken rules where punctuality, phrasing, and presence shape the experience as much as the meal itself.
Tables are held for a brief period past the scheduled time, and latecomers may be seated separately—or not at all—especially during peak hours. When calling to book, it helps to state your party’s purpose clearly, as staff may arrange subtle upgrades based on context. Avoid vague phrasing like ‘just popping in’; precision signals awareness of their workflow.
Arriving early by 10–15 minutes is customary at high-end restaurants, where guests are often greeted, offered water, and guided to a waiting lounge. At table service restaurants, the host may introduce themselves before seating, asking how you prefer to be addressed. Simple phrases like ‘osakini jaku wo kudasai’ (please go ahead first) before serving begins show appreciation of their method.
Grace periods for cancellations are typically strict, and rebooking in person or via a trusted local contact may be preferred over email alone. Many venues prefer direct calls over online forms; a single polite voice can prevent miscommunication more effectively than automated systems ever do.
