Most tourists book garages ahead based on signage alone, but the real value lies in knowing which ones allow re-entry after a quick run-inside. The garage behind the honky tonk on 4th Avenue allows two exits within 20 minutes at no extra charge—locals use it as a ‘park once, hop two bars’ trick. The lot marked ‘Public Parking’ on 5th Street often fills fastest, but the staff there let you walk away with your ticket if you leave before 7 pm with no penalty.
A few secret lots hide in plain sight—like the one behind Tootsie’s, accessible only by turning down a narrow alley off 6th North. This lot belongs to the building super and tolerates overnight parking if you leave a $5 bill taped under the front wheel. No signage, no gates. Nearby, the lot at the end of Commerce Street—referred to as ‘The Backway’—has fewer cameras and fewer officers after 9 pm on weekends.
Avoid parking on Broadway after 10 pm—the red zones stay enforced and towing picks up speed at midnight. But if you park on side streets like East Trinity Place or South 4th just west of 6th, officers rarely ticket after last call—especially near the bars with side exits onto those streets. Always look for the black metal poles; if a pole leans or wobbles, it’s likely a former fire hydrant and ticket-free zone.
